Brouage
Hiers-Brouage is a fortified citadel from the 17th
century. Seen from the sky it forms a stone star. A long time ago Brouage
was a port and a place for the salt (or "white gold") trade, which
made the wealth of this charming city, but the sea has gone away since,
leaving the place surrounded by swamps. Brouage is also well known as the
native town of Samuel de Champlain (about 1570), the explorer and founder
of the town of Québec in 1608.
If you go to Brouage do not miss the tour on ramparts, which offers splendid
views. Enter one of the 19 watch-towers that punctuate the walk. From this
promontory you might see Champlain, the local child, come back on his lands!
Do not miss Champlain’s House, it is a virtual museum that highlights
the New France adventure.
